Abstract Malaysia signed Paris agreement in 2015 as global response to climate change and committed lower the greenhouse gases emissions by 45% 2030. Under this national initiative, government planned a series of large scale solar (LSS) projects regulated Energy Commission. It is aimed achieve installed capacity 1 GW 2020. One main drawbacks for using energy intermittent issue power generation. This will affect quality reliability grid especially LSS systems. article aims identify optimize most technically economically viable storage system (ESS) selected locations among ongoing mega projects. The location selection study based on largest Peninsular Malaysia. project involved development hybrid scheme including Flywheel nine different types battery at six Commission Malaysia's data. Comprehensive systems have been developed with options applied locations. followed extensive techno‐economic evaluation net present cost, levelized cost electricity costs ESS, operation & maintenance, initial capital investment, replacement revenue from annual throughput, so on. Comparative studies under two dispatch strategies local contextualized data carried out. optimal ESS type both technical has identified. In addition this, performance without temperature consideration evaluated. Last, metering used analyze that exhibit best performance.
